Sales Status of Fruits in Large Supermarkets

Sales Status of Fruits in Large Supermarkets: The Popularity and Price Fluctuation of Strawberries

Recently, strawberries have achieved the top sales position for three consecutive years in large supermarkets, gaining significant popularity. According to sales data from three major retailers—Emart, Lotte Mart, and Homeplus—apples ranked second. Notably, strawberries have maintained their status as the top-selling fruit since 2022 across these supermarkets, earning the love of consumers.

Factors Contributing to Strawberry Popularity

Several factors contribute to the popularity of strawberries. First, they can be consumed easily without peeling—just wash them with water, offering convenience to consumers. Second, the introduction of various cultivars, such as Seolhyang, Vitaberry, and Geumsil, has broadened consumer choices. These factors have significantly contributed to the increase in sales.

Price Fluctuations of Strawberries

Strawberry prices rose by about 20% compared to the previous year last November. The main reason for this price increase was a shortage in initial supply due to poor growth conditions last summer. However, as the seasonal supply has started to come in this year, prices have dropped to approximately 10% lower than before.

Intensifying Sales Competition

With the rising popularity of strawberries, competition among large supermarkets has intensified. These retailers are increasing the proportion of specialty varieties and making efforts to diversify consumer choices. Emart has been expanding its sales of specialty varieties like Honghee strawberries and Kingsberry to meet the diverse demands of consumers.

Lotte Mart's Fresh Strawberry Sales

Lotte Mart has launched the sale of "Dawn Strawberries," freshly harvested on the same day. The sales locations have expanded to all stores in the metropolitan area and regions such as Yeongnam and Honam. This strategy aims to provide consumers with fresh products while maintaining quality.

Related News and Consumer Trends

Recently, at the Amicogen shareholders' meeting, minority shareholders removed founder and CEO Shin Yong-cheol from the board. This incident showcases the power of minority shareholders and indicates a growing interest in corporate governance. These changes are also influencing consumer trends, prompting large supermarkets to adjust their sales strategies accordingly.

The popularity of strawberries is expected to continue, and large supermarkets will keep striving to meet the diverse needs of consumers.
